PRESENTATIONS:
1. Paul Gagnon of Long Point Conservation Authority spoke about invasive species. He gave an example of
the keys of Norway maples which wash through the storm system, deposit in the flood plains, germinate and
grow to take over these areas. It is good to plant native species but they have to be maintained by
removing the invasive species. Problems are European Black Alder, phragmites and Japanese Knotweed.
Manitoba maple is a native to Canada but not to Ontario where it is invasive. Education of the public and
commercial tree nurseries is critical. He advised to plant prairie grasses which have roots up to 16 feet on
ravines and waterways to prevent erosion of sand which ultimately ends up in the Great Lakes. Paul
suggested having a sign with pictures of trees along the trails listing the native species that the hikers can
look for.
RESOLVED THAT a sub -committee with Paul Gagnon as consultant be formed to produce newspaper
articles to educate the public about invasive species and how to make better choices. Moved by S. Saelens
and seconded by P. DeCloet. Carried.
