THE LONDON Tim et, in au editorial on the British C.dutnbian Indians, says that the Local Government and th* white population of British Columbia ought to oppeso no further obstacles in the way of {tbo settloiiicutof existing grievances. The Indian policy of the Canadian Govornmnnr has been eminently prudent, pacific aud humaue. and has been justified by tho results. Canada lias hitherto been | justly proud of tbs pence maintained with ihs aboriginal tribes. Her triumphs have been won by equity and kiudoess. Any delay in settling tha difficulties in British Columbia would be supremely dangerous to the credit and tranquillity of tbo Domin ion. THE MATTER of expanse io putting dewo new sidewalks, making streets, culverts, ate., and keeping the eatno in repair, is con siderable in a town of tho size of Ingersoll. Oue reason for this is that the houses arc scattered fartltcr apart than they ore in larger and consequently more densely pop ulated towns and cities, and hence the ex tent of sidewalk and sliest is much greater in proportion. London, Aug. 27.—A correspondent, an »yc witness of Friday's fircat battle iu Scbipka Pass, telegraphs Saturday:— ■■ Riding backward from Scbipka through tbo night, I passed masses of reinforce- mente, artillery and infantry, hurrying for ward. Their strength ought to aecnre the safety of this all-important petition." The same eorrerpoudeut telegraphs from Bu charest Sunday :—" luform ilion follows me that fighting at 1 bn pass i> still raging, having been ngaiu renewed to-day, but Raditesky continue* to hold hi* own. Auy on* who chanced to meet him, or rather coma on him unawares at this early party of the •lay. would find him probing the rarth with a pole he over carried along the roadside or iu tho adjacent fields. When questioned as to what lie was at, the answer would be made that lie was looking for roots. Seven teen years ago bo died in Wvst Oxford township rather suddenly, but not before ho told tho hostler of the*stable in which Turkish MSanltiug parties were main cd farmer by whom be was employed that he hnd a keg of silver hid in Canada, gave a description of the locality whoro it was bidden and also gave him a rude sketch of the spo . Whether ho had come by tho ■>oney rightly or wrongly he did not say. Thofarmer, Anderson by numo, was of a sup erstitions character and temperament. He pften told bis family that ho intended some day to be rich but that to attain this end he must needs go to Canada. To Canada, however, be never went. He died about 1857, leaving besides several daughter* two boys in infancy. Ho mad* a will dividing tbo property among the family. H* also loft a sealed envelope with bis lawyer tb* instructions being to deliver it to hi« two boys when the .youngest camo of age. They had often been* told of the eccentricities of their father and they wore not surprised when on breaking the seal they found a f.iw scrap# of writiog telling them about a fortune being buried in Canada for them, the directions for which were also enclosed n* well a* the aketsh made by Lionard. Tho boys laughed, said they ihmigbi their father was in oue of hi* moods when he left the envelop* and said they had no in- toution of looking for the forttine. Never theless the brothora agreed to take each a cony of th* directions and plan, thus per mitting whichever of them went to Canada to make euqnir.es. Tho younger went off tn college, the elder remained in Portage. For tho last few month* tho latter brother lias been thinking of the buried money, ami, ozee his curiosity was aroused, ho de termined to come to Canada todonk for it. About three weeks ago ho arrived at Cath cart, in Burford township, and began mak ing enquiries with due caution. After he had made the acquaintance of two young mon of. that village, ho told them of his mission, 'and naked their assistance, bat withheld tbe plan till they wrro ready to begin operations. They made their ar- । rungements, and on Thursday, th* Oth of I August, provide! with spades and crow- bar*. th»y begnn work at lb* spot indicated, about three-quarter* of a mite from Catb- J carl. They weto rathei encouraged whnr', without difficulty, and relying solely on th* napere, they found tho stone under which| the keg was said to be. Without mncli exertion they rolled the stono awav and began digging- Tiny had not gone down more tbnn a foot when tho tep of the keg was laid bare. In a few seconds the keg tvn* fully exposed, and in transports of delight they seized hold to lift it ont. But who can tell of ibeir disappointment when tbe keg wps found to bo empty. T"eir dis appointment, especially that i»f yonng Andora?n, soon gave place to rage when on closer examination they found Iwo American half dollar# of ths coinage of 1828 in tbe bottom of tho keg. thus conveying to them clearly that tho money had been there, bul that some one had been before them and carried It off. Anderson al once charged bis younger brother with fore stalling him, aud left Cathcart tha' after noon for hum*. Nothing more is known about th* matter than Hint a yonng fellow bearing, ns people now say, a strong resem blance to Andaman, staid two d*ye in Cath cart during last November, and left early on the third morning. Such is tho story of the keg of ailver. In th* event of England drifting in war, at lout 20,000 horse# would be needed at once, aud the eupply would have to be kept up. It i» not, perhap, g nerally known that England yearly import* 25,000 horse*. Tho source* from which Sho draws these number# are, for tho present, unavailable, and will be #o for some time to come. The excellent condition of these has shaken my frith somewhat in the superiority cf fall plowing, so far at least, that it see ms the main advantage of it consists in the very con venient eet forwaid it is in the spring to have the plowing already done. Moreover, when the crap is corn, the cut-worm is not so dc- •WuctfVe, and in addition to these two rea son* for having the plowing done so as to lie bH winter, it has rise been considered that the frost had then a better effect in pulveriz ing the wil and making a good seed bed. There formerly were more difference* of opinion a* to the time of sowing wheat than there are now. The majority of farmers prefer early sowing and if the seed is well in the ground late in August, tho chances are more favorable than if sown later. Where wheat follows oats, the oat stnbblo should ba plowed immediately after tho crop is taken off the field. If the weather is dry, tho greater will be tho necessity for repeated plowing and rolling, to prevent tho soil from linking. A mellow soil, well rolled and packed, is what the seed requires to germinate io. If the eoi is clodded, tho young roots are exposed to the action of air in the open spaces, and dried and killed. .Tias i* the secret of many failures of what were at first promising seedings.
