THE NOTED LORD CARNARVON has notified the Queensland Government that the bill of the colonial legislature imposing an im migrant tax of ten pounds per capita on Chinese immigrants coming into that colony, could not receive the royal assent, as any discrimination against the subjects of the Celestial Empire would conflict with the treaty of Pekin. Ths Queen- landere think they are too muoh gov erned. Ox SATURDAY lost Sir John Macdon ald, attended by a brilliant political staff, delivered one of those spirited ora tions which never foil to create a perfect /urcr in his favor, at Brockville, where his in any admirers paid their respects to the great leader of the Opposition. On Monday another manifestation was held at Winchester Springs, Dundas County, and to-day the pic-nic party will demon- stmte at Alexandria,Glcngarv. A meet ing at Vankleck H ill on Friday will close the pic-nic campaign in Central Canada, at least for the present. THE IMPERIAL Post Office department are about to extend tho opciations of the money order service in Great Britain, by the introduction of " Puntel Notca.” These notes will bo of three denomina tions—twenty shilling?, ten shillings and iwo abillinga and aixjwnce, and tho fee will be one penny for the smaller and two pence for the higher denominations- On presentation of one of these notes for payment the hearer will be required to sign his name, but no other formality will bn gone through. Tlreeo notes are intended to facilitate and to cheapen tho work of the money order department, which has been found to be burdensome and expemdve aa regards orders for small sums. It is expected tliat tho introduc tion of these notes will do away with the practice of remitting postage stamps in payment of small sums, which is al most universally followed in England to the annoyance and loss of many persons. An lu l DrDl and tmpeetloa *f g» 4 c*., tagerreU. No. 4 Company of th* 22nd Batia’ion, nudsr oonm and of Major Elite, put in it* annual drill here last week. Th* Com pany mastered in foil force—all fine, young athletic men. This now make* seven companies of tho 22nd which have pnt in their annnal drill this 8»a*on, every one having mustered in full force. The old crack Battalion te bound to keep up its former reputation, and stand* 44 A number 1 ” in No. 1 District. Th* improvement made by Major Ellis’ Company, which wa* drilled by himself and hi* v*ry efficient Lieutenant, G. K. Brown, was beyond all conception; in teat it is perfectly wonder ful to see how fast th* Canadian volunteers pick up tbair drill under an efficient officer. On Saturday last th* Company was in spected by Deputy Adjutant General Taylor and Brigade Major Moffat, Miiiled by LieuR-CoI. Wonham. Col. Cowan, owing to a alight illness, was auabte to take part. After the Cempany had b«en put through squad and company drill, which they went through in a most creditable manner, they then marched to the Town Park in fours and front formed company wheeled to tho right—and dtployod from th* centra—advanced in skirmtehiug order commenced firing, retired, and went through other light Infantry movements by th* soand of ths bugle like old soldiers. Th* precision of these movemsnts consider ing ths time they had been drilled was per fectly astonishing, after which they marob- •d back te their former parade ground and were addressed by Deputy-Adjutant Gen. Taylor, who complimented Miyor Ellis on tbs neat soldierly appsarance of hi* Com pany, and the groat improvement they had made in drill in so short a limo, and said that it was otic of the best companies b* had Inspected this year, that it WM a credit to Major Elite and the Battalion to which it belonged. After the inspection was over Major Ellis and Lieut. Brown entertained the inspecting officers and other friends at their tent in their usual generous, hospitable manner. Croakers may croak, but it will be a long time before volunteering will die out, if wa can keep sueli men in th* fores a* Major Elite and Lieut. Brown. In conclusion, we might say, through tho energy aud perseverance of Col, Cowan the whole of the 22nd Bat talion have got new uniforms this year—of a vary neat and atylteh pattern—-and it is rumored that next year the whole Battalion is to be armed with short rifics and sword baynote, and in fact th* 22nd Battalion was never stronger or in better trim than at the present time, which tb* Deputy Adjutant General admits himself, and no on* ie better able to judge. It is a shame that the Drumbo and Tbamesford com panies, which belong te this county, are not attached to the 22nd Battalion, to which they rightfully belong. Than the loyal old County of Oxford would get full credit for all ita volunteer*, which it does not st the present time. W* understand that there is a movement on foot to thi* end. which we sincerely hop* will succeed. The rlitr of iha town were out to wituass Iha inspection, and all seamed to ba de lighted with the soldiers' drill, and th* quiet maunec to which they conducted themeelves. This meat Lox is about ‘ 24 foot by 35 feet, on which the beef car casses are hung. About 200 carcasses ‘ a^CT&lt brery week, and so successful lias the venture proved, that the quanti ty Beat fa only limited by tlm-want of frieght room. “ It is said tho English jjiiykct will take all the meat that ob tainable freight-room will jicrmit being sent. There cop lie no doubt that this trade will faj-largcly increased, and with “ajwopstaut fa crease in tho home demand, likely to bear a price that will pay our farmers well for producing. Iu view then of the comparative scarcity, and increased demand for fat cattle, the question occurs whether it will not pay dairymen in putting stock to be turned in good order, instead of selling it at the rtuDo^isly low rate that is customary. ! The plan now followed by dairymen, and which has been in operation for many yeara, is to sell off in fail all ani- mala that do not prove pix^tabln for in ilk. No attention is jxiid to putting these animals in condition for the sham bles. The price* paid for this kind of stock is usually very low, ranging from right to fifteen dollars per head for ani mals in ordinary flesh, and twenty-five dollars for large-sized cows for the butcher. Good sized younger animals, thin in flesh, are put off at the lowest rates named—some of the animals arc well along iu ycais and the whole lot for fAle fa generally “ lumped off ” to the buyers dealing in this kind of stock at buyers' prices. In years past, the poor er specimens of this kind'of stock have been slaughtered merely for the rounds and bide, and the remaining part of the carcass thrown away. M«ny an animal that in spring cost tbo dairyman from $50 to $60, while proving unprofitable for milk lias been sold in the fall nt Tt»m eight to ten dollars, or for such rates ns could be obtained, Now, the the cause of these low prices comes from the poor condition of the stock. It is xiot fit for marketable beef, the farmer thinks it will not pnj’ to winter it, and tberefoie disposes ot it, making a heavy loss between pnrehnso and sale. Tho general |>ractice ns nboye dcHCrib- ed we beljeve to be entirely wrong, nnd that Letter results would bo obtaimxl by putting at least a portion of the animals ill flesh and fitting them for the slinm- Ltifc It seems a great waste to kill nn nidioal jx»r in flerii. If dairymen would engage more generally in growing roots, turnips and maugoldg, the nniwnls Bou Id Be fattened without any great out by for meal, nnd a considerable profit wouU be obtained from this branch of the EUBIQIM, instead of flit loss winch ia now made. Much of this stock is y ielding little or no milk by October. Jf they were at once dried off and fed n HUle meal with ptimpkjne, turnips and other available food from the burn, the Old farmers are apt to think that the limei are degenerating, and that farm life is by no mean* what it used to be. Per haps not; bnt many of tliecliftugei which hate t.ikon jilace Ou the firm are iranrove- nieote. The most discontented firmer who live* would not like ti go back to the “good old times” when all Iha family nte in Ilia kilcboD, with the food rerved up on a bare Libia in an eorthern dials from whicn all partook in common, or that olbor Hltlo more stylish mods—a pewter platter—with “caeeknives’^nd iron forks. Th«n again there is a pleasant change in the stylo of equipage. Wo would not go back to lbs times, if wo could, when far mers rode Io church oa the Sabbath in the game old waggon with which they got out manure during the week, and this without much washing. Neither Lave wo any hank ering fora rido after the poky, long-necked, .high-ribbed, angular-built, mansrol horses of the olden time. A board srat in a spiingloss wagon, aud a horse that requires constant whipping to keep him on a dog trot may bo very good for dyspepsia, but there is rnnro exhilaration and less loss of time with a Host roadster before a light vehicle that does not rattle hke a stage coach and Las some elasticity in its cush ions and springs. At the same time young America has no right to keep fast horses on t^o farm- They are a luxury which ucno bnf tIio rich can afford. Beside their first cost, their earn and keeping are en ough to frighten the average farmer. The fust horse may have his pLieo in ths world, but that place is not Un the farm. He can neither plow nor mow. and will sol lorn bo permitted to take the wife and children out to ride. Ail such service is for menial animals. Tbo trotter might gel stiffunod by work. Thera is no investment moro un certain than that iu fust horses. And now what ahull wc cay about the girls who try to be fashionable on the fartn,-nnd sai' about in pull-back dresses and with friz zled hair? Criticising girls is ticklish business; but at all events, let these and id! other fashionable fillies be confined t* wo- mon who Lava nothing the to do bnt dress. We c-xpect letter things of farmers' wives ami daughters. To them life is earnest, end not a butterfly existence. It only requires : ■ ahang-* «rf practice which hw always Midi Hl In loss, and whieh fate l**n da- Wo have repeatedly dwelt on the neces sity of keeping milch cows at nil times in a umfarmly good condition. Any deteriora tion nut only causes a speedy decrease in the yield of milk, but even after extra food- ing has restored the nmmal to her former good date, it often happens that Ilia form er flow of milk docs not really return. Whenever, thmfarc, there is any likely* hood of a seireity of ordimry food or pas ture, it is always advisable to have at band euma means of temporarily supplementing the scant supply. The dai'yman should seek for cows of a vigorous appetite and strong digestion—the more food the more milk. Sonu cows havo each facblo appetite and digestion that they consume only about food enough to maintain their nor mal condition, and do not yield tniik en ough to pay keep, while in other cases th* dairymen, not appreciating ihophilosphy of the production of milk, instead of generous feeding, that he may get a liberal return, feeds Lia eows so scantily that Lis profile are even less than his feeding. Such dairy men only feed well, if st till, when the cow is at pasture during the growing season; and when that becomes short, his cows only piek enough to live. This becomes a most destructive waste of the profits. Every dairyman should provide u liberal supply of extra food far sneh ft coctingency. Tbi>t dry limo ft'tcn occur* in July, and thus checks the yield of milk, which can never be fully regaiasd. In m auycasoi this los< amend* to one-lhlrd t’10 annual yield of milk—which is really all the profit. A little extra green faod oi oats, rye, millet, Hun garian grew, elovir, er corn will kejp np the flow, of milk, nnd tide them over thio short supply of pasture; aud when tbo raio» bring the fresh fall grata, it will Lo rondy to supply the bast faod to continue a good flow of milk till Jala in the season, making a profitable return. The dairyman should never permit his herd to subsist wholly on a scinty failure, oven far a week. Il is much better to find a little grain to make up the deficiency, if Jie lias not stieb green faod ss mentioned.—Hural New Yorker. REMOVED Joh n M cDonald’s B lock, SOnn OF D. WHITE'*. D. S.
