There is a prevalent nation that a well should be ventilated for ihe purpose of allowing noxious gasses to •Mape, and that water is better for bvi>;p exposed to the air. I hardly need atato that the ouly noxious g uses in a well (thri is, gases which render cho water unwhole some) are the products of the decomposi tion of organic matter which Las found its way into the well in ways which Lava been deaaribod above ; aud Chut water aa it flows in its subterranean passages is more per fectly aerated than it can be in any other (Graphic). Marti EstMetKi. The former’s home may be mode a place of groat interest and attraction ; or it may bo as repulsive os any one'could well im- azino. It is not necessary for us to dwell on tho repulsive features; those who have never felt them have viewed at a distance the shabby premises, the incessant toiling, the almon co of home oom forts, tho worn-out, untidy house-wife, the rough and soiled far mer and bis men. Fortunately, many of vs live In neighborhoods where very differ ent scenes are witnessed. We could cite many examples where farmers, even in quite limited circumstances and still in debt for their land, make country life and country homes the source of mack enjoy ment and often tonnes of exalted plaatnre. Out of twelve working hours each day, they can devote a tenth to brntbing up their premises, and adding to their garden or or- namontul plants, and to their collections in natural history. Tho female members of the family may not bo able to traverss ths Tillage iu idle calls, bat tbo farmer who has good horses can, if he has the spirit of civilization, give them many pleasaul rides at times not iatsrferia; greatly with hit work, and even if there is samr interference, he bears in mind that sueli onj >ymoat may be really more valuable ami more perfectly fulfilling the purposes of a short life, than merely rolling together dollars and cento by uninterrupted work. The present con dition and Itfa of tbo farmer, taken as a whole throughout tbo country, is constant ly improving. With occasional drawbacks and financial reverses, there has been a great increase in means and facilities,in culti vation aud ia appliances for tho perform ance of farm tabor. A powerful agency is constantly at work throughout the land, tending to au elevation of the character of conn try residents and rheir appreciation of their surroundings. This agency is public * school education, and tho remarkable in crease in tbo number of Iba higher class of these schools, the academies and seminaries and their improved instruction and influ ences arc sending out al! through the com munity a large number of young peraomr who arc infusing an improved element into country life. Wo already see a distinct change within the past t wenty years. These public institutions, largely or mostly at tended by ths sons and daughters of far mers, arc silently and powerfully advening the respectability of our agricultral people. A great drawback in tho coinfort of a far- mcr'slife, more especially to the female por tion of the family, ia the very common practice of boarding and lodging a largo number of hired men. Tbo result is that th# former's wife is compelled to keep n per petual boanliug-houSte' She has no rest. Hence, we sometimes see farmers' wives worn out twenty years before their time. Hence, also, the aversion which some far mers' daughters lave to marry farmers, •with the certain prospect of such a hard life before them. Wo have often urged, as a preventive of tbit evil, the erection of work ingmen’s cottages, and the employment of married mon as farm laborers. Long ex perience shows that this method ofsnpporl- iug laborers is much cheaper than the per petual boarding-house plan. Hi* hardly reasonable that the wife of the owner should work like a slave to board a hired man, while the wife 0! that hired man ia at hotna doing nothing, not even providing a meal for bar own husband. A change in this particular would prove a great and .es sentia! improvement ia ths farmer'* life. Willi some ot these discomforts removed tho educated farmers' families may have within their reach, al their own homes, an iunoutft of interest and enjoyment difficult to obtain by tbs proposed plan of moving into village*.—Country Gentleman. to lake * Wen. Mr. J, W. Pinkham has a paper on * WeE* and CUtcrne" in Scribner for Sep tember, with plane showing bow they are contaminated, and how they should be constructed. ROWDYISM. — Ingersoll is perhaps ns moral a town as wo have in Canada, and to keep onr reputation unsullied shall bo our determination. White we seo but little .crime in our neighborhood there nro a few elements at work if left unwatched may develop into sotnetoiug serious. Wo re gret to-sny that there is a class of vonng boys who generally makb it convenient to elub together in public place?, commit uuisauoes, and generally annoy those around them. We think it high time tort this matter be accorded tho attention li roqnires, by tho proper authorities. FULLMAX GATTIE CABS.—A now venture, in too interest of both commerce and hu manity, is the introduction of “palace can" for cattle. Several of these known, as Me* Pherson's palace stock oar«, passed through hero the other day. Tho cattle have the advantage of light, air and comfortable stalls, and they are abundantly watered and fed on tho cars, instead of being ro- moved two or three times to be gorged at filtliy stock yards on tho way. The result is that, white each car carries a greater weight of cattle than tho old box-cars, the shrinkage Is found to ba some 40 per cent, less on arriving at the destination. San derson, of London, Canada, end now iu our city visiting in tho fnmily of his brother-in-law, our respected townsman,A. Howell, Esq. The rev. gentleman's tbemo was the Bible, and if our opinion is of nny account, wo venture to say that in point of fluency of utterance, convincing argument, moving eloquence, and mental power, the effort was ono that would not suffer materially by comparinon with the best ■■fforts of many older and more experienced divines standing in the front rnuk of nnlpit orators. From a mere log, at he really is, such au intelligent treat was a complete surprise to the large congregation whose rapt attention he held fur about tliree- qnmters of an Iionr, and when •‘Aman" was reacheil, it seemed the universal wish shut tlio sermon trad been longer. Mr. S. is certainly a young preacher of great pro mise, and should his faithfulness prove commensurate with life ability, as we trust it may, wo cau safely predict for him ” brilliant future, and wo Iicnrtily wish him God speed iu his work for tho Muster.
