TOK D EFEAT of Mr. Laurier of Drum mond and Arthabopka fa another dfatinel tall of tha death knell ot the Mackenzie administration. Mr. Lanriar was a man above reproach personally, and as etieh was selected by tba Govern mon t to take the plaoo of Mr. Caucbon, who WM <1O- graded both personally and politically to such an extent that it wnsfatiml impossible to retain him longer in tlio Cabinet without injury to tho party. In order to get _ rid of Mr. Cancbon ho VM appointed Lieutenant - Governor ot Manitoba, in .' tbo hope that his removal to this far (distant Province would in a moasuro place , him beyond close observation, but they . counted without (heir host, and the chief ! organ of the Rofunu party of that Pro- viarc, the Manitoba Free Prete, is out. spoken in its condemnation of the np- ■ poinimmt and of tbo mon who mado it. It was thought that Mr. Laurier, n mau above reproach in his past record, n man of influence and sterling ability, nnd a repii^ul.’Hro of o constituency which for eighteen y <rs has been acknowledged to bo one of the most rm.'‘bfa slroDgbclds of tho Reform party in tho 1'roYioce oi Quebec, would, by his appointment to a seat iu the Cabinet, lately filled by tho most depraved politician of (he country, .add strength to tbo tottering fabric of which Mr. Mackenzie is tho head. Tho verdict of tbo election of Saturday last has tipset this calculation- The contrast betwoon (ho result of lliar contest just closed and the one which-i^ok place nt tho last general election iu tho same constitu- ency is of a m rt damaging ehnrncter. Funr-yema ago Mr. Laurier was elected ns a private luctubef of tho If JUSO of Com mons by a majority of 238, and now he has been defrated by a maj irity against him of 29 Votes. Small though this ma jority is. yot when compared with tho majority of 238, on which ha took this seat, □ nd when the circumatunea is taken into account that at tho formjr cleotion ho wan only a private member, now be go.-a to Lis c mslitnents ns a Minister of tbo Crown, it is a verdict that cannot bo mistaken. It ii a direct vote by tho peo- pie of a want of confidence in the Gov- ernment. It is a direct assertion hy the people that a reaction lias actually taken placr. It (ells Mr. Mackenzie and his colleagues that they occupy their seats on tho Treasury Bunches by sufferngc and ' not by the will of tho people. It eondems tho policy of tho Government, and is a fair indication of what the result will bo 1 at ti e next general election—a change of Government as sere as tha sparks fly up wards. Mr. Laurier by his own nets was an upright and honored man, and could command a majrfrityln nearly any of (he 1 canstilaencics of Quebec on these grounds 1 alone, lint so soon n, bo decondod to be- ( come one of tho creatures of Mr. Mackenzie by defending Grit jobs and arguing away Grit departures from principles aud pro- I fessious,. nnd assumed tbo responsibility of the policy, or waut of policy, o! the Grit G ivernment, by nccopting ft Boat in J the Cabinet, then, aud not fill th-m, was he । shorn of his great strength ns a public ! and influential man. Tim country is now • ready to repeat this verdict in every con- • etiluency, and evory d.iy that Mr. Mao- I keuzie holds on to the reins of power ho j docs so in opposition to the will of n ; majority of tbo people. He must sio it, ' nml Lal he tho manliooss of Mr. Ghil- i •tone, ho wonld at oneo place his resigns- tiou iu the bands of the representative of ' tho sovereign. Abundant experience, if web proof were neceesar^, show* that them is mom profit in fending the larger brood*, than thorn i* with the smaller breeds of animals, whether for meat or milk. Of coarse, there are exo ceplions in thia, ns in all genernlynles ; the small Jersey cow, for example, which is expected to produce an exceptional product of highly colored and finely flavored bnt- tar; but this docs not affect the rale above stated. It is only necessary to consider that, when we feed two animals ef 700 lbs. each, wo have to sapi^ the demands of two sots of breathing, circulating and mss- oular apparatus, which are conaiderab’y more extensive and expensive than tl^osc of one animal of 1,400 lbs. This i&lrue of every animal that we food, from the fowl aud.pig, up to Jbp cow and fatted steer. Ten small Merino sheep, weighing 80 lbs. each, will cost more to feed than four Cota- wolds of 200. lbs. each, or five of 1G0 lbs. each. Besides the gain in feed, wo have also a largo advantage in the less propor tionate amount of o’ffal in the fewer largo animals tMn in tho larger noinbcr of small ones. Where flesh and milk are the objects in view, this consideration ought to have great weight in the selection of stock to be kept. The choice, of course, will be restricted by the opportunities for keeping the stock, for it will not pay to keep Short horn cowsnpon a pasture where only small- active cattle exn pick np n living; hut, where other thinge are cqttnl, this consid eration should be well weighed. Jnst now, there is opening up a large opportunity for feeding stock for beef, which many formers will very soon find a deeirublo one to seize upon. In choosing animals for feeding, then, they will find it to their profit to select such large breeds os the Shorthorn or Hereford, where Iho locality admits of it; and where it docs not, they will cer tainly labor under the disadvantage of preparing for market an article which can neither sell Jor tho highlit price, nor can be produced at tho lowest cost, futhor, there is another advantage in marketing tho largest amount of product in ano pack age, so to speak, for animals of 1,500 to 1,600 Jbs. can be sent to market at leas pro portional cost than the same weight in the form of animals that are ono-half or one- third smaller. supplied by artificial mean*, it will 1>3 equivalent to a proportionate percent age of food. Moreover, it has bwn wall re- marked that boride* the actual low of food from-tho increased amount needed under ex,- posare to cold, there is a further leak of milk from a feeling of di« com fort The ucrolioc* srenfiwayr disturbed by influences that- canie pain er uocaaincar, and ev?ry ihivec of a half-frown cow will make“ltaelf visibl* in the milk pail." — To kf«p the stock in gcml, thrifty condition, therefore, and thereby to economise proven der, lessen the chance* of diaeaso and acci dents, and increase the yield of milk, M well as the amount of flosb, it is' necoMary not only to feed cows generously iu fall time, but also to profile a comfortable and-conven ient fh«ltcr for thetn, against^ the inclement changes of late autumn and tho stunus and rigor* of winter. Perhaps at no part of the year do cows need more care and attention than late in the fall, and yet, at no other season are they so gener ally neglected. Early frost* materially injure the nutritive value of the grasses that still often remain abundant in the meadow* and pastures, and milch cows urgently require additional food to keep np their strength and condition. The errors ramie by farmers in. their treatment of stock at this season, are often the result of ignorance or misjudgment rather than of culpable carelessness or mis- management. They -over-estimate the nn- tritiva value of tho forage in the fields, and by compelling their cattle to live on ths frost bitten grosses, tho animals fall off iu condition ami enter upon the winter lean and weak. It is very poor economy to allow cows to go into winter quarters iu lueh an unfavorable state, for the cost of carrying them through the season is much heavier than for stock that is vigorous aud in good condition at the com menccment of cold weather. It is mueb more difficult to put on Htth in winter than iu fall, and tho larger spiuunt of food required for laau stock during that indemcut season, for mare than counter-balances the expense of keeping the animals continuously In good condition ; for stock that in reduced iu flesh at the coiuuienccmcut of winter requires at least a quarter more food to bring it through to grass than it would, did it start strong and healthy. This fact is forgotten or ignor ed by many who suffer their cattle to run down iu the fall, milking them late, and al lowing them to bo exposed to all kinds of weather. Nor is this the only evil repilt of such care less or niggardly treatment It is not at al! improbable that the want of proper care and an insufficient amount of nutritions food in the fall management of stock, are influential causes of abortions. Cows that have been milked all the season very naturally grow more or lc« exhausted and lose vitality, and as cold weather comes on, require a generoe* abundance of nourishing food. If kept exclu sively on tho grasac* injured by tto frosts of October ami November, the tack of sufficient nutrition soon reduces the animals in health and strength and eouscqaeutly predisposes them to thi* disaster. Tlie water is admitted to tho breathing or gans by valves, and when it has given up its oxygen to the blood it is violently ex pelled through a sort of funnel, and the crea ture ia thus driven backward with great rapidity, while the broad caudal fin acts like a rudder in directing its course. It can als« move backward or sideways' by the action of its fins, and sometimes crawls along tho bottom with its long arms in n most ungainly fashion.
