"form” admitting advertisements hud loog since closed—aelorksnt fu (he advertieiug office, on tbo grouuiL ikor, and drowned, with the lights half down. The two gentlemen entered one of the offices, nnd began to ascend that long long stairway by which all editorial rooms are allnined, cuslom and economy invaria bly pulling editors in a garret, whence they may look down, physically aud mcutallyr on the World they write about. Moro tsk- grjiph boys, compositors, pro of-re ad era, and reporters passed Iha visitors on tiro stairs, who, when they had explained their busi ness to an inky office-boy, were admitted into tiro sancittm tanctvt’um at a colol-rat- ed morning paper. A close, low-roofod, smooky room, light ed by iunumerablo ArganJ burners, and filled with littlo desks, at which sat, etoop- ins, busy men pnffiug cigars or pipes, and scribbling with pens or pencils at lightning speed—that was tbo next scene opened to them. On some of tbo desks there were piles upon piles of newspapers from points as far apart nnd M varied as tl.- capitals of Europe aud plaintive outposts on tbo far Western plains. A little tin box shot up and down a wooden shaft in the middle of the room, into which rolls of mnuuncript were put by an oflicc-boy, who rushed from desk to desk and gathered the sheets ns they came from tbo writers’ bainle. From lime to time a nervous, sharp-voiced, imperative grutleifian, in a very much soil ed linou duster, called to ono or Ilie other of tho workers, and gave orders which would have deon quite ttaiotclligible to a layman, who might have mistaken tbo et- tablidiment for a slauglitcr-houso when ho heard apalo-fticod littlogentleman request ed to ‘’make a para graph of the Pope/' “cut down Anna Dickinson/'“doublo-lcad Gen-oral Grant/’ “put a minion rap bead on Peter Cooper," nnd “boil down tho Evan gelical Alliance." But making n paragraph of the Pepo simply applied to tbo eompiesskn of same news coueerring him into that spnee; "the minion cap bead" Intended for the venerable philanthropist meant tbo kiud of type to he used in tno liilQof a speech or lecture of his; “and boiling downwind “cutting down" ware two leehnica ides expressing eaude iFafior, The gtutleiuan in the incn duster wa« I Ue night editor in charge', tbo despot of tho hour, aud tho iul<nnediary between the writersand printers, tiro latter beingnn Uro flour above, and tho littlo tin box iu the slinft eommmiicalinu with them. By three o'clock the last line of “copy" must be iu the priutors' hands, and from midnight anti! that time a newspaper office iu tho editorial department is in a state of nervous intcusily and activity for which I can itnagiao HO parallel. The smoke from the cigars and pipes roiled up to the ceiling, and dio pons sped /.ver tho pages of mnun'.cript paper. The writers bout to thoir work with tremendous earnestness nnd coneonlmdou; there was not ono of them who bad written less than a column of matter that night, and some were closing two and three culumn articles, which contained nearly as many words as five pages of Hurpert M.tgaiine. They were pal« and caro worn. Ono of Ihctn Was headlrig oud cubdroading cable di-patclies from dio sent of war, another was writing editorial paragraphs on the im portant telegraphic nows that camo in, another was djiuuiug a now play in virulent prose, another Was rovielng a thrilling ac count of a murder, anathe? was transcribing his stenographic notes of a spucCh on die inflation of currency, another was pulling tiio finishing touches upon a wclbcousider- cd article criliciai ng a uebalo io tho Ffcncn Assembly, nnd another watabanrhed iu the description of a yacht race. 1110 little tin box in tho shaft boimda.l up and <lowu more frequently, and tho night editor be- camo more nervous and imperative than ever, as the Gugon of the big clock on tli« wall wont beyond two. The pageeof manu script wcro scut upono by one, aud long moist proof shoot* camo d»wa from tiro composing-ioofli. Then tho “catting down" beg-n, and sornO ol the writers saw ai^i- eles that h&l eittthom hoars of research annihilated by the stroke of a pen, or re duced fromc-dmnns to paragraphs—noton account of unimportance, but simply bo- causo tb^re is always a superfluity of nut ter, contrary to tho erroneous uuliou that the editor's groat difficulty is to fill his space —and in some instances even the para graphs were finally oinittod to make room for unexpected news that arrived later. To’egrams were still coming in at half past two, bnt soon after that hour cue dispatch brought tho words “good night,” and that meant tlie cioSfag, The night editor and bis assistant now disappeared into Iha composing-room, where they remained io snpcttaletfd th* moking-np of tho ftfrmt, and the men at the desks prepared to leave, or threw themselves back iu their chair* torn chat and some more smoke.—IVIL LIAM H.
