This is all very well, and arguments, pro and con, arc being free ly list'd and made public, and at tho first thought of tho matter it looks Quito reason able that tho exemptions should bo abol ished, but it is very singular that all this excitement should emannto from Toronto. I hat this is a fact there is no question, and OR iliis one city in tbo Province isjforemost iu kicking up tho hubbub we are inclined to look into the matter rather moro parti- cnlnrly, and tho moro we do tbo more wo find that it originates purely from selfish motives and sometimes we are inclined to think that if our opinion was consulted wo should bo inclined to kt tho matter rest just as it is nt present. Our Town Council were nsked by Alderman Hallam, of Toronto, to nign a petition to tho Lcgis- Isturci asking them to repeal tho exemp tion Act, and they very generously did so —we presume unthinkingly—and ccrtoin- ly without giving tho matter due considera tion. In Ingersoll and similar towns, and tho moro rural districts, there is very little property that is exempt from taxation—onr Town Hull and maikef building, schools, churches and ministers' incomes. Il the taxes uro collected on tho schools and pub lic buildings, it is only taking it out of ono pocket and putting it in tbo other. Il the taxes are collected on the churches, then tho people will possible bo taxed at a less rate fur general purpose but will bo obliged to make it up in their donations to the church which they support, and ns nearly every ratepayer supports some church or other, wo seo very little advantage to accrue to us from the proposed change. Tho mat ter is different in Toronto and other cities, where there are largo Government build ings and numcrons Government officials. Should they get tbo law repealed, Toronto would bo empowered to add There will be no workshops, factories, or foundries, but A Ioan nnd hungry race of shepherds will roam the laud, hording Bow Park abort-horns, The entire Reform Par ty, except tho Irish Catbolis remnant in it,, will hold office under tho Crown. Mr.Ed- gar will by royal letters patent have awnm- ed the narue of '• Edgar-Mercer.” The raunicipalllles will be content to k t Mr. Crooks have tboir debentures by the bun- | dred weight at old paper prices. Every man will bo his own official nssijnee, and it will bo treason to pursue even ths home industry of knitting stockings. Oar King street contemporary will bo tbo only paper extant, subscription to it being made ccn> pnlsory. The great North-West will be full of emptiness, eave whereat each Imag inary station along the supposed Jine of the projected Pacific railway a weird Neebitig appals the lone traveller. Tho national debt will bo 8300,000,000, and tho only available assets tbo oxidized stool rails bought in 1874, aud Mr. Huntington’s cop per mine, which will have been foisted up on tho Pablic Works Department (at tho Glasgow price.) John Madiver will bo Minister cf Education, G-W.McMullen his Worthy deputy, and Rev.Horrocks Cocks tetrarcb of Muskoka. Since then, this Ennio system has boon adopted in some of tho French town# with satisfactOTy ccomonical results. The process is a saxing of time, labor anil fuel, aud it is said Ural, while thr- clothcs are given a whiteness, unequaled to that obtained by any other method of washing, tho most delicate fabrics aro iu uo way injured. It ia simply to dissolve tw-o pounds of hard soap in a little water, and with it add to ten gallons of warm water, one spoonful of turpontino oil, and two spoonfuls of ammonia. Niis thoroughly with tho water which should bo kept at a temperature in Which tho hand can bo held. Into this solution place the clothes, and leave them frata two to three hours, covered as tightly as possible. Then take out cud wash once through tho warm xvater—little rubbing be ing necessary. Rime through two walcre, the last bluod, and tho clothes afe ready for the line. Tho solution can be reheated and used twice, Lot the second time it is □ccefsary to add ono-hilf spoonful of tur pentine and another spoonful of nmmouiu. Wo give this bit of foreign economy, -so that those of our friends who have an ox- permontat torn of mind, can try tho motbud and prove for ttumsches whether thia landed process is superior to oar old and well-tried modo of washing.—Hural JicnA. for Hoausod Prlco List of M ss e n Jlam li: CABLET CFtSAFIS. Suspicions of foul play wcro at once hinted nt, on Re count of various rumors concerning Miss Collins nod Mr. John Lutz, son of Mr. Ed ward Lnta at whoso house Mrs,Collins and danghler wcro visiting. On Saturday morning Dr. Ault, Coroner, decided to hold an inquett on tbo remains. A Jury of Iwculy-two were culled and sworn, nnd af- far viewing thu body, adjourned till Bp. m., so as to allow of a post mortem exnminp.- tion by Dr. Joy assisted by Dr. Moore, of Tilsonburg. On tho inquest being resumed, Drs. Joy and M0010, sworn, deposed that deceased had cuiiia to her death from tho effects of abortion. There was evidence of both medicine and instrnmouts to produce tbo same. Mrs. J. B. Collins and Mrs. Edward Lutz gave evidence to the effect that Miss Collins had passed from the kitchan into her bed room, aud a short tirao after, hearing a slight uoiKo, nnd going to ascertain the cause, found deceased on tho floor dead. It appears that Miss Collins had been boarding tit Lutz's during a greater part of Iho summer aud fall, and was supposed to bo receiving tho attentions of Mr.Jidin Lutz. Mrs. Collins, formerly a redid ent of this vicinity, but now living iu Ohio, had returned to Canada about a week ago for the purpose of taking her daughter homo with her, but in this sho was opposed by the daughter who wished to remain. At a late hour Iho inquest was adjourned till ten Monday murmng which being ro- samed, Joltu Lutz being sworn, admitted to having had improper intercourse with deceased; also that an engagement of mar riage had existed, which he had intended to fulfil. Ollier witnesses were called, among them a Mrs. Harris, u neigbor, who deposed that when called, after iho death, she found a syringe on Iho bedroom floor, and was par ticularly desired by Mrs. Lntz not ‘o mention tho fact. It was then decided to nr- rest certain parties on suspicion. Accord ingly warrants were issued against John Luiz. Mrs. Luiz and Mrs. Collins. On Smiday tbo remains were interred nt Mount Elgin, the family being very respectably connected there. Deceased was just 16 years of age, and rather of an altractivo appearance. Great excitement prevails iu tho town and vicin- ty over her sad and untimely death. FVETllSJl PARTICCLAna. On tho inquest, hell concerning Iho death of Miss Theresa Collins, being resumed yesterday morning, Mrs. Jantiie Wilcox testified to Mrs. Collins mid dungbter visiting at her house in Springford ; she suspected tbo condition of de ceased seven weeks ago, from Lor appear- auc'-; did mt know if Mrs. Collius wn« taking her daughter to Tikouburg for tho purpose of procuring an abortion, but suspected fia. Mrs. Lutz told me that uba had told Mrs. Collins to use the syringe, but Mrs. Collins replied, “ I will not, but Theresa, you go and use it, and do it wo’L” Mrs. Lutz seemed to be uneasy about Ihe syiingo and said to me, " If you say any thing about that syringe iu court, it will send mo to tba penitentiary for life." I said “ If they’ ask me the question Low am I to get around il ?" Sho replied that there were many ways of annweriug a Question, and nol telling a lie. John Lutz wished mo to work in their favor. Ollier witnesses were called, who testified to knowing of the engagement between deceased, and always understood that he intended marriage.' After a long nnd tedious examination the jury rendered a verdict about 8 p. m., to tho effect that Theresa Collins camo to her death by attempted abortion nt ihe house of Edwin Luiz, in the town ot Tilsonbarg, on Friday, 7lh Dec., 1877, and that Sarah Jane Colling, mother of the deceased, and Mra.
