His principal duly was to open the great doors of the vestibule for tbe entrance of Miss Congdon’s gaosts. And tbo one, who sought admission oficnest and received lire warm- cet welcome was tho Rov. Howard Langly. Manu's first expedition to Baxter Street Was not her last. Tho barriers of indolence aud selfishness that inclosed her heart hod town shaken by tbo appeslitf^ touch of Jemmy's little baud, and melted away altogether through tho enztobtiog inflnoHCe of Howard's gn.vo aud earnest teaching.More nud more chilly grow the Boafcb- ing winds, coming steadily from tire north j louder wore heard the sad stories of priva tion and Buffering among tho poor; and cold and grim mid bitter, tire winter Bettlcd down npon the city. Faithfully and earn- oslly Howard worked day by day endeavoring to alleviate, eo far as Jay in bis power, tho misery he saw around him : aud Maud ebook betself free of thi many claims that society made upon tier, to fol low him in his wanderings and assist him in his arduous work. Sids by eido they breasted cold and sleet and anoW to carry comfort and consolation to tbo wretched ( homes where disease and destitution were ' holding Ihcir horrid carnival. Together drey set themselves to work to arrest the progress of the war of destruction waged against their fellow-beings by starvation and eickners, stalking together baud in band. Many a hungry month they fed, many a shivering form they clothed, and many a bitter nud despairing heart thjy cheered and comforted. Bnt to Maud and Howard it seemed as if little had been ac- complfehoil by their earnest efforts in comparison with all (hero wus to do, and their hearts were often heavy with tbo thought when they returned to their liom«a in tire gray twilight, weary with their day's work. When Maud reached her house at evening after her visits among her poor friends, Jemmy was always waiting at tho door ready to receive her, full of eager questions and overwhelming in his loving attentions. Then he wonld follow her to her room, and after convincing himself that sho hud everything about her that could contribute to her comfort, would creep quietly down stairs and wait patiently for her to appear.‘ Jemmy, yon little fire-worshipper,’ ex claimed Maud one evening, as, rested and refreshed by a hath and a fresh toilet, sho entered tho drawing room and found the child alanding upon the hearth gazing earnestly into tbu depths of tire brilliant fire. ' What are you thinking about ?' ‘ Thinking how nice and warm an.1 com- forlablo it is here, and how clrcnilful it used to bo out in tho'stn'ct all alone in tho col,I;’ and Jommy shuddered nt tho recollection of his old aorrowful lite, aud tire tears Mine into his eyes. • Oh, Miss Maud, you are so good to me, aud 1 love you so f Then ho camo close.to where sho stood, and softly kissed tho hand that hung by her side on a level with his lips. ‘ Dear littlo Jemmv 1 Havo I made you happy, iiltla boy, stneo I havo had you with me 2’ Aud sho knelt down beside him and drew him tenderly to her breast. Thus Howard found them, locked in each other’s arms, with the dusky shadows of twilight gathering around, and tire ruddy firelight gleaming on their happy faces. Tenderly ho bunt over them, and gently raising Maud, transferred tho clinging bold of her yielding hands from tbo neck of tho boy to his own broad shoulders.‘ Will you give bar to mo. Jemmy ?'' No,' said Jemmy, stoutly ; and as How ard led her to a sofa and seated her by hie side, the boy followed them and burled bis head in her lap. • Half of her, then, Jemmy ?' einiled HownriL ' Y-o-s, half—perhaps,' sold Jommy, hia regard for Howard struggling hard with jealousy iu bis generous little son], Auu thus, with Jemmy’s arms around her neck aud Howard’s round her waist, Maud sat, eubdned and silent with the sense of her own exquisite happiness, until Jeems the magnificent, In all the glory of holiday aliife preternaturally shiny boot legs, broke In upon the quiet scene, and announced, in his most solemn tone, ‘DinnerI' ‘Oh, horror 1’ shrieked Mre.
