In hii address, Mr. Kino made some good points, which wo regret not having space to give to our readers. Toward Ihe Dr.McTaggart told that gcntl-nnan that the giil seemed to require kind trcatm>jnt more Hum medicine, and that if sho had the former sho would speedily recover. Since that time tho doctor has been called upon to sen tho girl again, and during that time a girl who worked in the factory infonnc<i him that about six weeks ago, the proprie tor lied her up by tho wrists, pot a gng in her mouth, aud aiterwards beat her. Iu order that tin imputation* cast upon Mr. Hargraves’ character might ba cleared np, the doctor, on Friday, took out a summons ng.tiust Hirgraves, enjoining him to appear at the police court on Saturday forenoon to answer the charge. Tho investigation justified the charge and brought to light ono of the worst coses of punishment we ever remember to have rend of having been infLcted upon a ho’pkss child by a brutal on® in LH oxc'.tel calling for signers to tho plo.lge, and about 30) signed it. The King-St. Church bring the brgost ftn.litnriirn in town, and which was kindly offered by the pastor and trustees, became tho contra of oporntiocs for Monday and TitoS'Liy. It w.is packed each evening, by crow.1s of pe< pie intent upon listening to n inin whose chief excelbnco, as a public speaker fo that ho lias a good cause and ad vocates it with all his might. Uis addres ses, in mnnv respects txei-llent, and dis playing a good deal oi original genins aud not a little culture, arc often marred foar- fitlly by the obtrusion of slang phrases and low Inngnago, and one could not help wish ing that his better judgment had fold bhn to leave theso unsightly and repulsive tilings out. The sympathy of the speakers was with the Fire Company, and the general feeling was that th«y had don* their best. The cause of the .delay in getting on a full stream of water was decidedly not tta fault of Iha firemen. It must be borne in mind, hov. ever, that the quality of water sometimes baa consid erable influence on the yield of milk. Water foul with decompMing organic matter, may injure the general health of animals, and to decrease the secrelion of milk ; while viator, in itself harmless bat possessed of a rfiaagree- *We taste, often acta injuriously on the yield of milk,‘becauso the animal will not drink a sufficient quantity of it to promote a full lac- teal secretion. Partly for the same cause, water whose temperature is too low, is apt to reduce the yield of milk, because cows will drink only a very moderate quantity of it aven when specially thirsty, while the pre cess of digestion is retarded by the introduc tion of very cold water iuta the stomach. Experience goes toprove that tba best tem* I^roture of water for stock, is that which is pretty uniformly mainfcuucd in a Well of mod erate depth. From these facta practical dairymen, and indeed, all interested in dome# tic stock of all kinds, should draw the lesson that cows and otter animals, to yield the best returns, must be provided with an abundance of pure water, easily accessible at all times. Dancel's opinion may.alro be, M a rule, accepted : that the quantity of drink habitually consumed by a cow is a valuable teat of her worth as a tnilk producer ; and hence, that an animal that generally drinks aa unusually small quantity of water—say 27 quart, per day—is necessarily a poor milker.—Rural Xtw i’orker THE OXFORD TRIBUNE, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 13, 1878. C. G, RinS-—Will tho Rural please ex- pl*iu what influence, both as regards quantity milch cows hua upon their yield of milk 1 ANS.—Experience has told not only practi cal dairy win hut every observant cow-keeper, that when cows arc fed on a diet containing A good deal of water, their yield of milk is Ltx-- tjian when their food contains but little moiaturo ; and every summer furnishes a met. titudc of instances proving that cows shrink rapidly fit their milk in dry, hot weather, when water is scarce and the animals do not get their usual supply. But although it has long been known that an increased secretion of milk follows the cousumptiou of an unu sually large quantity of water, it has been very often assumed, that a thinner and poorer quibt^of milk is then produced, amLtbat the increase iu quantity consists diapropor tionatcly of water, 'lie experiments of Dan cel, however, as communicated to the French Academy of Sciences, repeated and extended with greater precautions by Stohmann, goto prove that this assumption has but little foun dation in fact. Dancel states that when he gave cows from 20 to 25 litres of bran mosh instead of the ourresponding amoout of dry bran, the auitnals still drank the usual quantity of water and gave from 14 to 10 litrei of indk par h<md instead of the ordinary yield of from 10 to £4 litres, without any depreciation either in tho quality of tho milk or in that of the hut- tornado from it Similarly, by inciting tho animals to.drink largo quantities of waler by the adtninistraliou of salt, an increased socre tion of milk was produced, and milk that WM yielded under this water regimen, having been carefully analyzed as tests chemical and physical properties, was declared be of good quality—a decision confirmed by tli• ex cellent butter obtained from it. It was Dan- cal's opinion that on observing the relative appetites for drink iu a number of cows, and the quantity of water ucually consumed by each member of a herd io the course of twen ty-four hours, aud comparing thia quantity with that of the milk produced, the inference is inevitable that the yield of the milk is io direct proportion to the quantity of Water ab- •orbeA His experiments, however, were not conclusive as to whether this increase in quantity was at the expense of its quality, as he made m> special examination of it with a view to determining this point. It wax reserved for Stobmanu, by experi menting upon goats at Holte, to afford clear proofs that au increased supply of water is followed not only by a larger yield of milk, but also by an increase in its dry constituents. Moreover, at the aunc time he took of the in fluence of an extra supply of water ou the bodily conditions of the animahi. From an atudyau of the incn»SBd yield of milk pro. dneed under the stimulant of an unusually twge cousaniption of water, the appetite for which bad been artificially provoked, M well as from tho quautitativa determination of its enutitaaut parte, it appeared that the in crossed aceretiou Wai not due to on unusually large proportion of water contained in it, but to an- aalnal increase of all ite constituents. In other words, t^e eompwition of tho extra Utge qpaatity of milk yieldiod in the three days during which the experiment lasted, cor reloaded almost exactly with ite coraposi- tion tmmediaXeiy before and immediately KEEPING PURE-BBZD STOCK. ‘Many farmers have made the mistake of trying to keep and breed & herd, or flock, of pure-bred animals, aud liave, through their failure, brought discredit upon each stock. Pure-bred stock, M a rule, arc uot profitable for farmere. They eost too much : no farmer can jffurd to pay $2^000 to $3,000 for a herd of 10 pure-bred cowan They are used to care ful tending and high feeding, and their pro duct fa no greater than the average of good grades of these breeds. We.know of no herd of pure-brcff animals in existence, that would pay ita cost of purchase and keeping by its product of tnilk, flutter or meat alone ; it is only by the sale of animate for breeding that the profit in made. But admitting this to be true, pure bred stock are not for this reason to bo considered ‘ of less value. If wo have uot the pure stock, how can we procure the grades, whieh arc fouud so profitable ’ Grades, of high character, ore the most profitable fanners’ cows. Expcrinuo proves this bo so in every case. A most notable instance of it is found in the head of Mr. Thomas Fitch, of New London, Don,, who has been engaged in crowing the Jersey upon every other breed, including what are known as 'Giative ” COWA for more than 30 years. This breeder keeps a herd, of choice pure-bred animals, descended froiq the old.faeliioncd importations, made when the butter product was mnre thoneht of, than black points, solid-color, or other fancies, for the propose of raisins grade cows of largo prodreing capacity of rich butter. Probably no breeder in the country lias liccn more sqtcciufo] in hie line, and his success fa an cxanilds for faimera, which proves that it fa lies11<« choose one breed with which to im prove his native stock, to adhere to that, gradually grading np lifa herd, and selecting only (he beat to breed from. One pure bull, which may eost $250 to $300, will sire, during his vigorous period, nt least 50 claves, thus addinga small trifle to the cost of each over that of a calf from a common scrub bull. By ad hering to one breed, tin re is a certainty of arriving ata definite result very soon; but the too frequent habit of eh wgins every two or three years, no satisfactory rcsnlt is R.-iined. and after a life time of futile effort, the far- uiunt-y, and tiow Ihry uro likoly to receive little in return fot ilkir foulisli credulity. The premise “Lifa of Burns,” by Mr. George Gilfillan, of Dundee, will probably see tho light iu April. Mr. GiHilluti has iucorporated in bis work Ilie discoveries regarding the famous Glenruidt-l MS. and also as to Eurua' capacity and charac ter ks nn exciBetunn. CLEAN HAY. The feeding of clean hay to cattle is a mat ter of considerable importance, Still, very few farmers think much about it until they or their neighbors meet with some loss which forces the truth upon their minds. A while ago.ona of our acquaintances lost a fine ox. Tho animal died suddenly and without any ap parent cause. An examination of the body re- veak-d the fact that he swallowed a piece of steel wire which originally belonged to a hoop skirt, wl^gh had penetrated ouo ot the lung^nnd this ciusid his death. The wire had been pat into his manger with some hay, and proved very unprofitable material for feed- ing. And now conics a rep >rt from Kentucky that a farmer has lost three valuable cows from the effects of poison. A few tobacco leaves were mixed with the hay. The cows ate both leaves and bay, and soon died. Many eases can also be found in which the results though not nearly M bad as tbo above, are du- cideiUy uuupleoMnt We remember, when a buy at homo,(hat one winter tho butter which we ma>lo was quite bitter. Tne cause was for A while a mystery, but was at length found to be caused by a large quantity of thorough-wort in tho hay, Prohsbly ths poor quality of a great deal of tho butter which is sent to mar ket at this asason of the year is due to a simi- far came. Aad as no possible good can cotne from feeding either wire or weed«,or any oSher foreign nubstanee with the bay.it certainly seerna to be best to avoid all the dangers which such a course would involve.
