Township was called after the ancient tokni of Dereham in
Norfolkshire, England. The name was applied to the Township
before the counties of Oxford and Norfolk were separated.
Earliest settler came in 1799.
First lot sold by the Government was North Half of Lot 12,
Con. 1. It was sold to Stilson Hackett, January 22, 1834, at 14
shillings per acre.
Sutherland's Oxford Gazeteer published 1862-63 states: "A
very extensive trade in lumber is carried on in this township in
consequent@ of the great facilities of transportation afforded by
the Otter Creek, which flows through it."
Town of Tilisonburg is located in southeast part of the
township.
