The Tillsonburg Observer and
Fireside Companion newspaper
reported as follows. "The laying
of the corner stones of the new
Methodist Building at Mount
Elgin took place on Tuesday,
June 19 under the most favour-
able circumstances. A very large
number of people were present."
Dr. Brethour of Tillsonburg acted
as chairman while six stones
were placed in position. The first
was laid by Mr and Mrs. T.
Prouse; the second by Mr. and
Mrs. Reuben Smith; the third by
Mrs. Hadcock; the fourth by the
Foresters Lodge; the fifth by the
Dereham Council and Com-
missioners; and the sixth by Dr.
McKay M.P.P. of Ingersoll. After
the stones were laid, the people
were invited to place con-
tributions on them and the
response was generous.
The women of the church then
served a bountiful meal in the
Foresters' Hall. As a special
attraction, strawberries were
brought from Norfolk County for
the occasion. Following the
banquet, all were invited to the
Baptist Church for an evening of
entertainment. The day was a
great success, both socially and
financially.
All summer the work went
forward, with many giving freely
of their time. The railroad was
not in operation until 1901, so all
material had to be teamed from
Ingersoll. Church services and
Sunday School, meanwhile, were
